Jane the Virgin fans may recognize the Merrell twins as Jane’s bratty half-sisters, but there’s a lot more to Vanessa and Veronica Merrell than their acting resumé.
"We started our channel in 2009 but we never really did anything with it," Vanessa Merrell tells PEOPLE of her YouTube channel with her sister.
Veronica Jo Merrell and Vanessa Jo Merrell (born August 6, 1996), known as the Merrell Twins, are identical twin American YouTubers, actresses, and musicians.
The Merrell Twins are identical twin sisters born in Kansas City, Missouri on August 6, 1996.
Veronica "Roni" is 45 minutes older than Vanessa "Nessa". They grew up in Kansas City before moving to Los Angeles, California, at the age of 16 to pursue a career in acting. They also had a very short time with Disney Channel.
Both possess beautiful beauty, have charming dimples and have their own charms. Vanessa has two dimples and Veronica only has one on her left. Thanks to their outstanding looks, the two sisters were invited to cooperate with many filmmakers and fashion brands.
The Merrell Twins started making YouTube videos in 2009.
Their videos are produced and edited by their father, Paul Merrell.
“Ever since we were little, we’ve wanted to entertain. I remember being 4 or 5 and wanting a Barbie camera to film little movies on,” Vanessa tells PEOPLE. “But it was really hard to go after our dream back in Missouri.”
So their video producer father and school secretary mother moved the family to the Los Angeles area to give the twins a chance at Hollywood.
“We moved out to California about three years ago to pursue acting,” Vanessa says of making the move with their parents during their sophomore year of high school. “It was tough moving across the country and diving into a business where there is a lot of rejection. It’s a lot of waiting but we’re so happy with where we’ve already gotten in our careers.”
They have appeared in AwesomenessTV videos and had recurring roles on the television show Jane the Virgin.
They appeared in the 2016 film The Standoff. At the 8th Shorty Awards, they won for YouNower of the Year.
The Merrell Twins have Nearly 5 Million subscribers to their YouTube channel—relatively modest when stacked up against the platform’s biggest stars. But their fan engagement is very high, with their videos generating upwards of 14 million views per month.
The biggest lesson the Merrell Twins have gleaned during their rise to digital fame: stick to your guns. “People have said, ‘You guys need to do more mature material — raunchier stuff — otherwise you’re going to lose fans,’” Veronica says. “That’s not true! We’ve kept it clean. You don’t have to be sexual or curse to be funny.”
Adds Vanessa, “What we take from this is it’s OK to be ourselves. We’ve had confidence over the years to express ourselves.”
They won a Streamy Award for Best Live Social Media in 2016.
In 2018, they were nominated for two Teen Choice Awards, Choice Female Web Star and Choice YouTuber.
They won the 2018 Streamy Award in the Lifestyle category.
In July 2018, the Merrell Twins released their clothing line, and since Veronica’s name means true image, they decided to name it True IMG.
Every piece of clothing has a hidden butterfly symbol on it, because Vanessa’s name means butterfly.
They were nominated for YouTube Ensemble at the 11th Shorty Awards.
